In a follow - on project to be conducted in collaboration
with MedUni Vienna's Institute of Pharmacology and Center for Addiction Research and Science (AddRess) and, in particular,
with drug and dopamine expert Harald Sitte, amongst others, the objective is now to find out whether, and, if so, how, activation of DeltaFosB can be prevented and how this highly promising starting point can be used to treat the onset of
addictive behaviour.
With each mutation, the researchers tested its tendency to bind to dopamine, a learning and reward chemical in the brain involved in sex and
addictive behaviours.
Crucially, their use is most common among young people
with other forms of hazardous
behaviour, such as binge drinking, suggesting that they are simply being added to the portfolio of dangerous or
addictive substances that these often vulnerable young people are using.
We distinghish three (overlapping) themes: (1) Basic neurbiological research investigating factors involved in the initiation and persistance of
addictive behaviours, e.g. neurobiology of craving, neurocognitive deficits associated
with pathological gambling, neurobiological predicors of treatment success.

behaviours; obsessive thinking and OCD; pregnancy loss or postpartum depression; coming to terms
with change and loss and a history of sexual abuse.»
He works
with sexual dysfunction, orientation and identity issues, and
addictive typess of sexual
behaviour, informed by attachment and trauma perspectives.
