To coincide
with Alcohol Awareness Week, Drinkaware is calling on teachers and school leaders to introduce and develop alcohol awareness amongst pupils.
Alcohol Awareness Week is running from 14 - 20 November and Drinkaware is providing an introductory lesson plan designed to help teachers of young people aged 9 - 14 to quickly and efficiently familiarise
themselves with alcohol awareness.
It provides research and resources related to alcohol beverage regulation and policies and assists members
with alcohol awareness, public health and policy issues.

The concept of resilience and closely related research regarding protective factors provides one avenue for addressing mental well - being that is suggested to have an impact on adolescent substance use.8 — 17 Resilience has been variably defined as the process of, capacity for, or outcome of successful adaptation in the context of risk or adversity.9, 10, 12, 13, 18 Despite this variability, it is generally agreed that a range of individual and environmental protective factors are thought to: contribute to an individual's resilience; be critical for positive youth development and protect adolescents from engaging in risk behaviours, such as substance use.19 — 22 Individual or internal resilience factors refer to the personal skills and traits of young people (including self - esteem, empathy and self -
awareness).23 Environmental or external resilience factors refer to the positive influences within a young person's social environment (including connectedness to family, school and community).23 Various studies have separately reported such factors to be negatively associated
with adolescent use of different types of substances, 12, 16, 24 — 36 for example, higher self - esteem16, 29, 32, 35 is associated
with lower likelihood of tobacco and
alcohol use.
Both presenters report that therapists, after taking the workshop, leave
with an increased
awareness of the impact of substance and
alcohol use and abuse as well as process addictions such compulsive pornography viewing and gambling have on couple's attachment system and cycles.

There are times when it is possible to carry out an «Intervention» meeting in an effort to bring the person
with the
alcohol problem into greater
awareness of this reality.
Katanning Senior High School students were recently given the opportunity to work
with a crew from Indigenous Hip Hop Projects to create a music video which raised
awareness around the negative effects of
alcohol and drug use.

with difficulty making friends and lower use of
alcohol, 21 perpetration of bullying is associated
with more time spent
with friends44 and increased use of
alcohol and cigarettes.21 This suggests that although adolescents who are bullied may be at less risk for adverse health outcomes associated
with substance use, they may be at increased risk for somatic complaints associated
with poor peer relationships.3, 18 New initiatives such as the US Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration's Stop Bullying Now campaign45 should be evaluated for their efficacy in raising public
awareness and reducing the prevalence of bullying.
