With all the attention being paid these days to school accountability for students» performance on academic assessments, it's easy to overlook an indicator like
attendance, especially when the
data don't set off alarm bells.
Teachers are expected to track student
data, integrate technology, map their teaching to standards and be familiar
with the diverse ways in which their students learn, while also doing daily things like taking
attendance, getting students to lunch on time, tying shoes, resolving conflict, grading homework, and all the while making sure that all of their students learn.
If you look at most relevant
data on gender differentials — grades, college
attendance, engagement
with school, self - destructive behavior, etc. — boys show up as the «gender at risk.»

The HUSD began its partnership
with Attendance Works to better understand the dynamics around chronic absenteeism and to take advantage of the organization's ability to disaggregate
data in meaningful ways the district had previously not been able to generate.
