If an airline is said to have «good
award seat availability» that means that each flight has a large number of
seats available to those looking to book
with miles.
The next time you search for business class
award space to Seoul, South Korea on Korean Air's site, you'll notice they even let you know how many
seats are
available to be booked
with Korean SkyPass miles.
But
with airlines increasing the number of miles needed for many
awards, and reducing the number of
seats they make
available for the lowest mileage levels, these programs have lost some of their value.
American Airlines surprised many today when it announced several customer - friendly changes to its frequent - flier program. The new «One - Way Flex
Awards» will allow customers to book one - way tickets for half the amount of miles needed for a round - trip ticket, and will also let passengers book multi-city itineraries and combine
award seats with non-
award seats.Under the old paradigm, passengers could only book round - trips to and from the same city and were forced to fly in an
award seat of equal value for both legs of the journey. This often made booking
award travel an exercise in futility — for example, an
award seat might be
available only on an outbound journey, but not the return trip. But now passengers will be able to fly to New York in an
award seat, and return in a premium - fare
seat if a return
award seat is not
available.
With 2
seats in first class from the U.S. to London
available several days each month, British Airways is one of the easier first class
awards to find.
This means that there are many routes
with open
seats available for
award tickets going empty, but you may have to call the airline mileage program to find them.
The points can be transferred to partners or used as cash through the Amex travel center, which offers a choice for purchasing a ticket
with points when
award seats aren't
available.
As it turns out, there are two flights
available on December 21st
with precisely four
award seats each
available to Avios bookers:
AA 266 showed up in my search,
with 3
available award seats (now down to 1 after my booking).
So the results of a recent study by consulting firm IdeaWorks, which ranks airlines by
award availability should come as no surprise — it shows that Delta ranked last (23rd out of 23)
with the fewest low - level
award seats available based on the nearly 7,000 queries it conducted.
As an example of how one program works, United normally offers its saver
award seats in the lower 48 states at 12,500 miles each way, but when a saver
award isn't
available, those
with a United co-branded credit card or United elite status typically can secure an
award seat at the 25,000 - mile standard
award level each direction, as long as
seats are still
available for sale
with cash.
Award seats are
available on these routes for those who would rather not part
with cash but, if you're using United Miles (or Miles & More miles) you'll only be getting around 1.0 cents / mile in value:
In general,
award availability to Florence from the U.S. is good when using American and United miles, but there are fewer
seats available when booking
with Delta miles.
OneMileAtATime has noticed that
award availability on this new route appears to be wide open
with as many as 6 Business Class
seats available on some flights.
As I was playing around
with the British Airways Search tool, I noticed that there are as many as 6 business class
award seats available for travelling to India next week.
Assuming the holiday rush cuts down on
available award seats on United, you're likely to get pushed to a higher tier
with your United miles, which could mean spending 40,000 miles or more on a domestic fare instead of 25,000.
But if you are stuck
with airline miles and can be flexible, look for alternative dates or destinations that have
award seats available.
The top five domestic
award travel destinations, and the airline
with the highest percentage of
available seats, were New York City (Southwest at 12.8 percent), Los Angeles (Delta at 11.7 percent), Las Vegas (Southwest at 10 percent), Miami (Southwest at 13.7 percent) and Orlando (Southwest at 9.3 percent).
Membership Rewards points can be transferred to partners or used as cash through the travel center, which gives you a way to purchase a ticket
with points when
award seats aren't
available directly from the airline.
While a route serviced by an A350 should be an aircraft where premium
award seats can be made
available, it's likely that availability for business class
seats will be scarce so I wouldn't rely on booking these
seats with partners like United.
Delta and US Airways are the most parsimonious
with awards,
with seats available only 36 % of the time.
But
with either Aerolineas Argentinas or LATAM, you can usually find plenty of
available award seats from Buenos Aires to other destinations within Argentina and neighboring countries.
