By pouring her
acrylic pigments (she works almost solely
with black and white) directly onto glass and letting them dry there, she can then slice into the pigment and, having cut out a cartouche or a length of filigree, can carefully lift that segment of limp
paint from the glass and position it upon the canvas.
Unlike the surfaces of earlier
paintings, in which thin layers of rolled
acrylic paint constituted the backgrounds onto which
black pixelated images were silkscreened, the backgrounds of the Shadows canvases were
painted with a sponge mop, whose streaks and trails add «gesture» to the picture plane.
The first four pieces one sees upon entering, a series of white, blue, yellow, and
black paintings which utilize
acrylics, oil, and magic sculpt on gesso boards are each adorned

paint that has been blended and forced through sheets of burlap laid face - down on a variety of objects and surfaces (from plastic tiles and garbage bags to silkscreened enlargements of Hagen's own high school drawings) that act as molds, effectively casting the
paint, or becoming embedded elements in the surface of the works themselves.
I think of this as the subtext of Untitled (1968), a relatively small work
painted in
acrylic on paper mounted on board,
with its flickering flames of bright cardinal red licking at the edges of the bottom beam of
black.
