Those
in favor of allowing
breastfeeding in public say feeding your
baby is about as natural as it gets, so if you have a problem
with it, just look elsewhere!
Not only is this practice one that can be difficult for both Mom and
Baby to navigate, but parents also have to deal
with naysayers who believe mothers should avoid
breastfeeding in public (even when their little one is screaming and hungry).
Not
with standing any other provision of law, a mother may
breastfeed her
baby in any location,
public or private, where the mother is otherwise authorized to be, irrespective of whether or not the nipple of the mother's breast is covered during or incidental to the breast feeding.
While breast may be best for
baby, some mamas are reluctant to
breastfeed because they aren't comfortable
with breastfeeding in public and don't want to be stuck
in their house for months.
And so it's such a great way of helping these moms
with younger
babies get over their fears because they see all these other women
breastfeeding in public and it's no big deal so I just think you know power and numbers to like it definitely helps you overcome your fear if you're not the only one doing it.
It's for anyone that is supportive of
breastfeeding and it's fine
with moms being able to feed their
babies, the way they want to feed their
babies in public.
With so much controversy over moms who
breastfeed in public, how can a new mom feel comfortable feeding her
baby when she's not behind closed doors?
Not everyone is on board
with a woman
breastfeeding their
baby in a
public place, but that's their problem, not yours, so do whatever you feel comfortable
with.
That might be the first place I
breastfeed in public as we asked questions, I was sitting there waiting and like I don't know why, though they must be ready to go [laughs] and so am sitting there and I had my
baby and was he probably 5 weeks old and
in my head I was like saying, «I should have been here sooner, I should have been here sooner», [laughs] which is irrelevant but that what's goes through your head and then I was like I guess I just do it and it was the meanest thing because I'm sitting on the floor
with my
baby and I didn't have to use the cover and I was just so «Oh, you just have to do it like
in a room full of women» and everybody is
in just as uncomfortable and everybody is trying to make this dance work and trying to get a rhythm and they needed this thing to be able to do and I would imagine for me it was a good transition to being
in publicand not to worry about the cover but also for women like ok, this is your group for example.
You have figured out how to
breastfeed through teething, nursing
in public, and all the other new challenges that come
with the first year of a
baby» s life.
I t might be a bit on the thin side but it's huge so there's more fabric to work
with for
breastfeeding, covering the
baby's car - seat, stroller, bassinet even laying the
baby / child on the floor on his / her tummy as for me I use this a lot for a burp cloth and use this at changing station
in public restrooms and on the
in home changing table.
We didn't seriously contemplate sleeping
with the
baby at night, mostly because of the safety concerns we had heard about, but we planned to keep the
baby's crib
in our room for the first six months to facilitate
breastfeeding (as recommended by Canadian
public - health officials.)
I'm hoping that continuing to take my supplements and starting domperidone will take me to exclusive levels of production, but all I know is that I haven't received shade from formula feeders but I have received it from breastfeeders, and that makes me sad because I unapologetically nurse our son uncovered, remind everyone that boobs were made for feeding so they can deal
with breastfeeding in public, feel that breastmilk is truly the best for
babies and have an extremely hard time
with the fact that I can't feed him just breast.
People don't realize how often
babies are
breastfed in public because mothers and
babies are so skilled at
breastfeeding discreetly that it often doesn't register
with viewers.
Many laws around the world make
public breastfeeding legal and disallow companies from prohibiting it
in the workplace, but some people are uncomfortable
with seeing a mother
breastfeed her
baby.

I agree
with SnowBunny44 about this article discouraging new moms about
breastfeeding in public, but would also offer a piece of advice to those moms: «practice»
breastfeeding with a blanket / cover over the
baby several times before trying it
in public.
And, they encounter unhelpful responses to their challenges
with breastfeeding in public: «if other people don't like it they can throw a blanket over their heads, don't be ashamed to feed your
baby».
Evenflo has since decided to abandon the WHO Code
in favor of more marketing, and one of the results is this advertisement that mocks
breastfeeding in public, depicting uncomfortable and pushy
in - laws who claim that
breastfeeding means no one else can feed and thus bond
with the
baby, and includes an awkward scene after the mom pumps (We wanted to be able to share the video
with you but after a strong backlash it appears to have been pulled but not after millions had already viewed it.)
Practice
breastfeeding in public as soon as you can
with baby steps.
Ingram and Johnson worked
with fathers to increase
breastfeeding support for mothers and found that fathers» attitudes to
breastfeeding in public and knowing how much milk the
baby was getting had the most influence on whether they supported their partner to continue to
breastfeed [52].
Some barriers include the negative attitudes of women and their partners and family members, as well as health care professionals, toward
breastfeeding, whereas the main reasons that women do not start or give up
breastfeeding are reported to be poor family and social support, perceived milk insufficiency, breast problems, maternal or infant illness, and return to outside employment.2 Several strategies have been used to promote
breastfeeding, such as setting standards for maternity services3, 4 (eg, the joint World Health Organization — United Nations Children's Fund [WHO - UNICEF]
Baby Friendly Initiative),
public education through media campaigns, and health professionals and peer - led initiatives to support individual mothers.5 — 9 Support from the infant's father through active participation
in the
breastfeeding decision, together
with a positive attitude and knowledge about the benefits of
breastfeeding, has been shown to have a strong influence on the initiation and duration of
breastfeeding in observational studies, 2,10 but scientific evidence is not available as to whether training fathers to manage the most common lactation difficulties can enhance
breastfeeding rates.
