Some of it has to do
with the origins of
circumcision in the United States, some about the actual
procedure, some about the effects of
circumcision and about the current rates of
circumcision in the U.S. I read a lot more than I will blog about here, but these are some things I thought were worth mentioning.
I think you made some great points about IF parents choose
circumcision for their baby, to be present for the
procedure (which I can imagine is so much more reassuring to the baby to hear mom / dad's voice rather than being alone
with a doctor) and insist on the anesthesia.

with more and more parents choosing to forego the
procedure, approximately 55 percent of infant males are still routinely circumcised.

Circumcision used to be a traumatic experience for an infant, but today
with modern analgesics and pain management, infants often sleep through the entire
procedure.
Complications occur in approximately.2 - 2 percent of
circumcision procedures and may include bleeding, infection, negative reaction to anesthesia or problems
with the foreskin such as failing to heal properly or reattachment to the end of the penis.
Bleeding and oozing is one of the most common problems associated
with circumcision (as
with any surgical
procedure), occurring in close to all
circumcisions and is usually easily controlled by gentle direct pressure.
The AAP says they do not want babies to have unnecessary
procedures that cause pain because of the negative outcome that is why they have this and only, the latest data that I have seen and I spent a lot of time keeping up
with the recent data but only 45 % of people that do
circumcisions in the United states use the appropriate pain relief.
