with their wits about them who reads scripture and prays and is genuinely humble will see that many of the
issues which push people into «camps» - especially but not only in the U.S. - are distortions in both directions caused by trying to get a quick fix on a
doctrinal or ethical
issue, squashing it into the small categories of one particular culture.

Most of the
issues related to the Bible and warfare (warfare seems to be what history is made of and there are usually multiple causes and interpretations for each conflict) had to do
with power struggles (also the most human of all endeavors) and perhaps
doctrinal issues of freedom related to these power struggles.
Among the best is that by Professor Robert Fastiggi who wrote, «I agree
with Pope Francis that there are many beautiful insights about marriage» in Cardinal Kasper's presentation, but on the
issue of communion for the divorced and remarried, Kasper is decidedly wrong, for reasons laid out by Fastiggi and by Francis's own
doctrinal chief, Gerhard Cardinal Muller.
It remains to be seen whether that tolerance for diversity will extend beyond strictly
doctrinal issues to the points at which religious concerns clearly interact
with social attitudes.
I advocate this method, not over minute
issues of interpretation, but
with regard to the big questions - theological matters such as the canon, major
doctrinal issues, ethics, and liturgy.
