A select set of strategies will be explored to deal
with ecosystem resilience relative to security of energy, food, and water resources.

With the rainfall in 2016 there was increased scope to improve the health and
resilience of aquatic
ecosystems using a top up of Commonwealth environmental water within the Namoi River Valley.
My research addresses this need by (1) Characterising the spatially explicit functional role of reef fish; (2) Evaluating the interaction of fish
with coral reef structure across spatial scales; and (3) Uses this information to evaluate the effectiveness of cross-scale diversity of function in fish as an indicator of
resilience in coral reef
ecosystems.
Just like
with rainforests and other
ecosystems, experts believe that gut microbiome diversity may contribute to our overall health and
resilience.

With Climate Change: Speakers
The IPCC also reports that the
resilience of many
ecosystems around the world is likely to be exceeded this century by an unprecedented combination of climate change; disturbances associated
with climate change, such as flooding, drought, wildfire, and insects; and other global change - drivers, including land - use changes, pollution, habitat fragmentation, urbanization, and growing human populations and economies.
These focus in particular on building the capacity of communities to adapt to climate change in ways that allow them to moderate potential damage, to take advantage of new opportunities and to cope
with the consequences of climate change, and on enhancing the
resilience of communities and the
ecosystems on which they depend.
In particular, it presents four key messages, namely that: biodiversity is key to climate change adaptation; a different set of policy directions, changed incentive structures, reduced or phased - out perverse subsidies, and increased engagement of business leaders is required to work towards «holistic economics»; environmental limits need to be established to ensure society remains within them in order to achieve sustainability; and
ecosystem - based adaptation (EBA) is an emerging approach that works
with nature to help vulnerable communities and build
resilience to climate change.

ecosystem services, and the
resilience of
ecosystems to climate change; field experiments and models designed to learn about coupled human - and environmental systems and to test different management interventions • The valuation of

Minimum tillage
with biological nutrient recycling, as opposed to plowing and chemical fertilizers, could sequester 0.4 — 1.2 GtC / year [176] while conserving water in soils, building agricultural
resilience to climate change, and increasing productivity especially in smallholder rain - fed agriculture, thereby reducing expansion of agriculture into forested
ecosystems [177]--[178].
The objective of the programme was to strengthen the capacities of these countries to build
ecosystem resilience by promoting EbA options and to reduce the vulnerability of communities,
with particular emphasis on mountain
ecosystems.

This preparatory work is an essential part of permaculture (short for «permanent agriculture»), a way of designing and maintaining «agriculturally productive
ecosystems that have the diversity, stability, and
resilience of natural
ecosystems» (in the words of workshop organizers) that emphasizes working
with the land rather than fighting against it.
