crop growth, and fossil
fuels are used heavily to make modern fertilizer.
The food versus
fuel debate has put large - scale biofuel production in a squeeze in recent years, but competition
with food
crops is just one drawback for which biofuel
crop production is criticised.
Please stand
with these organisations and ask your MEP to put the brakes on food
crops being turned into
fuel.
Another category is biomass grown in excess of what would have grown absent the demand for bioenergy, such as growing winter cover
crops for energy and replacing traditional — yet inefficient —
fuel wood harvests in some poor countries
with wood grown in agroforestry systems and local plantations.
However the limit would still expand the use of food
crops for
fuel and would not end biofuels competing
with food production.
we are not choking the biosphere
with carbon residues owing to fossil
fuel combustion and reducing this insult by instead burning
crops or other biomass.
Clearing land to grow
crops for «green» biofuel and mandating tree planting to reverse the effects??? Brazil's enthusiasm for ethanol has contributed to deforrestation and all the attendant destruction of biodiversity and yet we encourage these alternate
fuels with additional subsidies.....

crop — that is why it is risky for the country to rely on it for any meaningful portion of its
fuel --(along
with environmental pressures, etc.).

with food prices rising sharply in recent months, many experts are calling on countries to scale back their headlong rush into green
fuel development, arguing that the combination of ambitious biofuel targets and mediocre harvests of some crucial
crops is contributing to high prices, hunger and political instability.

The good news is that it can be done
with existing technology, by cutting energy waste, expanding the use of renewable sources, growing trees and
crops (which remove carbon dioxide from the air) to turn into
fuel, capturing the gas before it is released from power stations, and - maybe - using more nuclear energy.
Physical improvements include switching from fossil
fuels to renewable energy, producing products
with longer lifetimes, reducing unnecessary waste, shifting from animal to
crop products, and investing in new technologies5, 29.

Undoubtedly there are myriad problems
with using food
crops to make
fuel, or using the land on which food
crops are grown to produce
fuel, but the answer to that problem is not simply taking the waste of another environmentally and ethically suspect activity and repurposing it.
The Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) which released its comprehensive report on the current status of bioenergy today, says the conflict between growing
crops for food versus biofuels is artificial and can be resolved if the United States, Europe and other rich countries drop protectionist policies and work
with developing nations to increase the use of the eco-friendly
fuels.
These
fuel crops can produce usable energy
with < 10 % the energy inputs of corn (McLaughlin and Walsh 1998),
with lower water and nutrient requirements (Msangi et al. 2007; Heaton et al. 2008a).
Biofuels also are contributing to the hikes but mainly because the EU and the United States are subsidizing domestic production of
crops like corn that offer low efficiency when turned into
fuel and compete
with other foodstuffs for large swathes of land in these already densely populated areas, Clini said.
Faced
with a seemingly insatiable demand for automotive
fuel, farmers will want to clear more and more of the remaining tropical forests to produce sugarcane, oil palms, and other high - yielding biofuel
crops.
