After
working with gifted students for six years ~ I have spent time with them in the classroom ~ at lunch ~ playing games at recess ~ and met with their parents.
In my opinion ~ these teachers were experiencing the same challenges that I faced when I first worked
with gifted students ~ and before I had received training on this topic.
Finally, few teachers have the training and support necessary to work
with gifted students so they do not know when and where to apply pedagogical skills within their disciplines.
Generally this opportunity is granted only to students whose parents have met with a counselor
familiar with gifted student needs, and who have support from their parents and current school.
These individuals can provide overviews of how to successfully work
with gifted students since they have been trained in this area.
In 2008, PsyCorp, the publishers of the WISC - IV, provided Extended Norms for the WISC - IV for use
with gifted students who score 18 or 19 on one or more of the subtests on the WISC - IV.

Project ELEVATE has allowed each school to have its own gifted education teacher who, in addition to working
directly with gifted students, is also in charge of creating schoolwide enrichment programs.
As we discussed earlier, the under - utilisation of
acceleration with gifted students in both Australian and American schools arises largely from a genuine lack of awareness, among teachers and administrators, of the research support for this intervention.

Guidelines for working
with gifted students Researchers, (Bartelo & Cornette, 1982; Bagaj, 1968; Cornette & Bartelo, 1982; and Sakiey, 1980) have presented some general guidelines for working with gifted students:
Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted (SENG) was formed in 1981 and includes a website which provides a wealth of gifted education recommendations and resources for parents that include names of speakers and workshop leaders, books and research articles, contact information for active parent groups, a list of mental health professionals that work
with gifted students, and how to get a child tested for gifted.
Schools which give themselves the opportunity to observe the positive academic and social results of acceleration by using
it with a gifted student then go on and use it with subsequent students.
An administrator who is supportive of students who have extraordinary potential will realize that there are instances when certain teachers need extra time to work
with gifted students.
