well with me in producing six subsequent titles and now «wrap - around»
cover design on the last three.
Well, the first thing I tell anyone I'm consulting
with on
cover art is to go to Amazon and search for your subgenre.
Along
with his
best friend, he invents a new band every few hours — a band name,
cover art, song titles — no matter that neither boy owns a guitar.
XD
Well anyway (non comic) books seem a little different because maybe the author wants
cover art and can't make it themselves (vs
with comics, if you can make the comic you probably made the
cover first)... I guess the other major difference lies in what people think they are getting.
Hawkeye continues to be a darling
with the critics, and justifiably so,
with 5 nominations for
Best Single Issue, Continuing Series,
Best Writer (for Matt Fraction),
Best Cover Art (for David Aja) and of course, Matt Hollingsworth's colours.
Cool
cover art still exists, but as the 25
best book jackets of 2012 show, they're trending toward bold simplicity,
with high - contrast colors and giant, graphic font.
But formatting for E is so incredibly easy, and I hate to see indies putting money on something that's easily learned
with a little effort rather than on something that would have more bearing on their sales — like a
good editor or
cover art.
Also, this series seems to release super slow, too bad as it jars
with the extreme fast pass of the story, its not a
good thing, but the story and
art and all that, pretty
good, the concept alone is interesting, and the characters and concepts as presented are
good, but, these volumes are edited to a degree, which is odd, this is a teen series, so, why cut the swearing, why change the names, why doctor the
art when there's nothing mature to
cover up in the first place... not
good choices on the part of the American release staff, though this volume doesn't have those things to such a degree so, maybe those comments should be for a earlier volume.
And if you have a little
art background and have been paying attention to
covers of the books you read over the years,
with some practice you can do a
cover good enough to look professional.
As
with illustrating, typesetting, writing or even playing guitar, producing a
good cover design is an
art in itself.
I recommend epublishing because
with the
best of the bunch, the author gets free editing and
cover art, then is free to sell those books to traditional print publishers.
