The array of claims around Alberta's crude is wide and varied: on the one hand, anti-Keystone groups contend that dilbit — i.e. diluted bitumen, thick oilsand crude mixed
with light
hydrocarbons that will allow it to flow through a pipeline — is more corrosive than other types of oil and sinks in water rather than floating, which makes it harder to clean rivers and
lakes after a spill.
Why are Titan's smaller
lakes full of clear, pure methane, when scientists expected the
lakes to be clogged
with hydrocarbon silt?
Scientists
with Cassini's radar investigation will be looking this week at their final set of new radar images of the

lakes that spread across Titan's north polar region.
The observatory's long history is punctuated

hydrocarbon lakes on Saturn's moon Titan.
This suggests that over geological timescales, so much
hydrocarbon snow would have dissolved in Titan's
lakes that they would have become saturated
with the stuff (Icarus, doi.org/tzb).
The mountains are made primarily of rock - hard water ice; the dunes are most likely ice granules coated
with hydrocarbons; volcanoes probably belch methane and ammonia, and methane fills the
lakes, evaporates to form clouds, and rains back down to carve out river channels.
Titan's north polar region, which is bejeweled
with sprawling
hydrocarbon seas and
lakes, was dark when Cassini first arrived at the Saturn system in 2004.
