In order to mitigate golden eagle predation on
island foxes, The Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group,
with the support of the Park Service and The Nature Conservancy, trapped and relocated a total of 44 golden eagles, including 10 eaglets born on the
islands to distant sites in northeastern California.

island fox marks territory
with urine and feces.
Clearly,
island fox evolutionary history has been intertwined
with humans across the entire timespan of Native American, Euro - American ranching, and modern conservation management eras.
Our divergence date estimates for the
island fox clade itself, ~ 9200 years ago, as Santarosae separated into four distinct
islands and for the southern
island fox lineage, ~ 7100 years ago, correspond well
with the earliest AMS dated
island fox bones (~ 7100 cal BP for northern and ~ 5640 cal BP for the southern
islands).
The
island fox feeds on an incredibly wide variety of insects, vertebrates, fruits, and terrestrial molluscs,
with the proportions of the diet depending on where the
fox lives and the time of year (2)(4).
The
island fox (Urocyon littoralis) is a species endemic to the Channel
Islands, and it occurs on the 6 largest islands, with each island supporting a distinct subspecies (Collins 1993; Gilbert et al. 1990; Goldstein et al. 1999; Wayne et al.

islands had a least one private haplotype, but 19 of 41 Santa Catalina
foxes (southern
island) shared a haplotype
with Santa Cruz
foxes (northern

With the continuation of such determined conservation efforts, hopefully the
island fox will one day serve as an example of how critically endangered species can be pulled back from the brink of extinction.
Island foxes moult twice a year, gaining a winter pelage in October to November, which is replaced
with a less dense summer pelage during March to May (5).
Despite small population sizes and limited geographic distribution,
island foxes have generated and maintained mitochondrial diversity, even
with population reductions to only 15 individuals on some
islands during the 1990s [11].
Results from our comparisons of genetic diversity in
island and mainland spotted skunk populations correspond
with results from studies of
island and mainland populations of
foxes (Aguilar et al. 2004; Wayne et al. 1991) and deer mice (Ashley and Wills 1987; Gill 1980).
Remarkably,
island fox haplotypes formed a monophyletic clade nested within clade B, rather than
with foxes from southern California, closest to the Channel
Islands.
Island foxes are primarily monogamous and mate for life,
with a pair sharing a territory until one member of the pair dies.
