And if you want to make this with almond flour instead, I'd start with removing the milk, as almond flour needs less liquid than coconut flour.

Michelle, I haven't played around with this recipe using other flours, but if you can tolerate coconut flour, that may work (if you want to play with the recipe, start with much less coconut flour because it absorbs more liquid than almond flour).
I substituted the wheat flour with spelt flour (and used about 1 1/2 cup instead of 1/2 cup — the almond butter made the batter extremely sticky), I substituted the coconut sugar for about 1/2 cup of maple syrup (could have gone for less, too!)

A simple one - bowl recipe, the cake's main ingredient involves coconut or almond flour, which absorbs moisture so well that you can get away with using much less (also saves on ingredient amounts, which is always great!).
The only way the researchers were able to use it with standard recipes was to replace 20 percent or less of the wheat flour with coconut flour.
Without running, I needed less carbs in the morning so I ditched the oatmeal for these mug - cakes, which I made with a new favorite ingredient: coconut flour.
Thus far I've had less than spectacular results with coconut flour.

Hi Natalie, I haven't tried it with coconut flour but if I were to substitute it, I would use less coconut flour and more liquids (add an egg) as coconut flour is a lot more absorbent (I generally use about 1/3 cup coconut flour per cup of almond flour).

If hazelnuts are less absorbent than almonds and coconut flour much more so, you could experiment with mixing the two — my suggestion.
Perhaps there was too much coconut flour for the amount of liquid used, this can happen with eggs weighing slightly different amounts which can throw the liquid off a little or if there was a little less liquid added / extra flour added.
More absorbable than the kind I buy so I use less in recipies or mix with bought coconut flour.
A much healthier and less toxic version would leave out almost everything you suggested and use things like almond or coconut flour or even healthy protein powder and be sweetened lightly with local raw honey.
I use this brand, but the brands are less important with coconut flour in my opinion.
This is a really economical and easy method - and from a pound of coconut, I end of with several cups of fresh coconut milk and at least 2 cups of coconut flour FOR LESS THAN $ 3!!!
Perhaps with less cocoa, or added applesauce and banana, and 1/2 cassava flour 1/2 coconut flour, they might turn out better.
You need far less coconut flour than wheat, cassava or even almond flour, and it works best when you use it with eggs for good structure and texture.
If you don't like the way yours turn out, feel free to play with the coconut flour amount (I have had to do this a lot since starting to make them) by using less than the amount I listed, or more.
I forgot to add that you use much less coconut flour than called for with all purpose flour or whole wheat flour.
I think I will try again with 2/3 less of the coconut flour.
