A new study suggests that genes may not be to blame for the increased risk of heart disease some studies have shown in people with migraine, especially
those with migraine with aura.
The study found that people
with migraine with aura were more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with Parkinson's than people with no headaches.
People
with migraine with aura had 3.6 the odds of reporting at least four of six parkinsonian symptoms, while those with migraine with no aura had 2.3 times the odds of these symptoms.

Reporting in today's issue of Neurology, Stephen Silberstein and his colleagues at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia say that women are twice as likely to experience
migraine without
aura — the type most often associated
with menstruation — during the first two days of their cycle.
The pattern is so predictable that Rennich, a 28 - year - old electrical engineer from Acton, Massachusetts, can say, «If you want me to get a
migraine with aura at two in the afternoon, I can give you a
migraine with aura at two.»
For
migraine patients
with with no
auras, the cause of the pain is less apparent.
«
Migraine with and without
aura have a different aetiology,» says Russell.
«We already believed that
migraine with aura was a genetically transmitted disorder,» says Russell.
When it came to
migraine with aura, relatives of people who suffered from the condition were four times as likely as the general population to experience this kind of headache — and six times as likely as relatives of the people who had never had
migraines.
At the beginning of the study, a total of 3,924 of the participants had no headaches, 1,028 had headaches
with no
migraine symptoms, 238 had
migraine with no
aura and 430 had
migraine with aura.
«Surprisingly, when we looked for shared gene variants that might help explain part of the link between
migraine and heart disease, we found no shared gene variations between
migraine with aura and heart disease,» said study author Aarno Palotie, MD, of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.
«In other words, people
with migraine without
aura seem to have a lower load of genetic factors increasing the risk of heart disease,» said Anne Ducros, MD, PhD, of the University of Montpellier in Montpellier, France, who wrote an editorial accompanying the study.
«We don't know specifically how frequently they have to occur to really create a significant risk for stroke, but in general, if these
migraines with visual
auras are very frequent, the risk of stroke is higher.»
It wasn't until the late 1990s that neuroscientists discovered a deeper source of
migraines and their
auras — and
with it the potential for a cure.
«And some studies suggest that
migraines with visual
auras, when people see spots or various other kinds of changes in their vision associated
with their headaches, put a person at a higher stroke risk.

A malfunctioning pump in brain cells results in severe neurological conditions such as
migraine with aura, muscle spasms or one - sided paralysis (hemiplegia).
Recently, loss - and gain - of - function mutations in K2P channels have been directly linked to human pathologies (Birk Barel syndrome, familial
migraine with aura, cardiac conduction disorder).
There is a slightly elevated chance of blood clots, and if you smoke, have high blood pressure or
migraines with aura, taking the Pill may hike your risks of heart attacks or stroke.
And while there isn't a clear - cut connection, the occurrence of
migraines with auras has been related to some heart abnormalities, so it is possible that these attacks might have a connection to dysfunction of the heart.
Prior research has indicated that about 42 % of individuals who suffer from
migraine with aura saw the frequency of
migraine cut in half on days whenever wearing POTs.
The researchers calculated that 77 % and 96 % of a person's susceptibility to
migraines with and without
aura, respectively, is due to genetic rather than environmental factors (which is known as heritability).
In
migraine with aura, many researchers now believe, a wave of electrical activity begins — usually at the part of the brain responsible for vision in the occipital lobe, at the back of the head — and then spreads forward over the brain's surface.
In the study, published in the Lancet, 82 people who suffer from
migraines with aura received a TMS device, and the same number received a fake (or «sham») version of the device, which looked — and vibrated — just like the real thing, but did not deliver the magnetic pulses.
(She adds, however, that women who get
migraines with an
aura — meaning that they see spots or lights — should not use combined progestin - estrogen hormonal methods.)
Up to a third of
migraine sufferers
with aura have forewarning symptoms even the day before a
migraine attack which may well create the chance for intervention and prevention.
The «
aura» famously associated
with migraines only happens in about 15 % to 20 % of sufferers.
