Some of these
shells are shielded from direct contact
with seawater by a special coating that the animal makes (as is the case in
mussels).
Although a decline in modern bivalve
shell δ13C has been shown to be related to increased use of metabolic CO2
with age [21], [22], neither our midden nor archival
mussel shells showed a decline related to age (Fig 1a), nor did
shell of different aged individuals laid down in the same year differ in the δ13C (Fig 1b).
Thus, even though
mussels may not be precipitating calcium carbonate in equilibrium
with seawater [6], we can not yet identify a metabolic process that is causing a δ13C decline through time in modern
shells.
The rate of decline in
mussel shell δ13C from 1999 − 2009 was faster than can be explained by equilibration
with the rising CO2 concentration of the atmosphere and the increasing contribution of isotopically light fossil fuel carbon (the Suess effect).
