Pelto became more deeply involved
with public school teachers and
other education advocates during Malloy's 2012 assault on the teaching profession.
We engage
with our colleagues — at the NEA, the AFT, TURN, and
with public education advocates nationally — through web - based and real dialogue, conferencing, and seminars; publishing opinion pieces and
other print materials;; and by sponsoring or convening national conversations about key issues in
public education and
education unionism.
So she teamed up
with other education advocates to sue the state, arguing that Florida is violating its Constitutional obligation to provide «a uniform, efficient, safe, secure, and high quality system of free
public schools.»
Still, the efforts by CCEA and
other public education advocates to lobby for more funding will gain more traction
with lawmakers if and when community support steps up.
Here are two more opportunities to join
with other public school
advocates, share the truth about our schools, and plan some action to support and protect
public education.
In the wake of recent rebellions by teachers and
other public education advocates that have been taking place in West Virginia, Oklahoma, Kentucky, and Arizona, the teachers» unions in Florida have been largely silent on getting involved, mostly reminding
education professionals that we can not strike here due to the deal we made
with the Florida Legislature in 1968 that exchanged our right to collectively bargain for our right to strike.
