Because, in order to really make a dent in climate change and issues
with peak oil, it's going to take both conservation and nifty new technologies like acres of algae to save our hides.
How will the 6.5 billion people on this planet cope
with Peak Oil and a climate catastrophe at the same time?
My problem
with Peak Oil is that once it is upon us it will trigger a desperate search for alternatives that will include making gasoline from coal, tar sands and oil shales (among others).
With peak oil here (already, just now, soon, take your pick) I certainly expect to see ventures being started in a few years.
But
with peak oil / gas comes the potential for war and resources contention.
Net energy gain is going down (it's more energy intensive to pump oil out of deep water than out of a ground - based well under pressure) coupled
with peak oil that is either here or near in time, and global warming mandates reducing carbon emissions.

In general, I tend to agree more
with the «
peak oil» theory than disagree
with it, mainly because there haven't been a lot of new big
oil finds, and depletion of old fields continues.
