Although it is clear that there are ecological and socioeconomic benefits associated
with shaded coffee, we expose the many challenges and future research priorities needed to link sustainable coffee management with sustainable livelihoods.

Although I have found a lot of background information regarding
shade - grown
coffee, as well as more specific information mainly to do
with biodiversity indices and legislation and the requirements of the
shade providing canopy I have been having a lot of trouble finding practical resources for farmers.
I've written about their Cerulean Warbler campaign, which has included working
with Colombian partners and
shade coffee farmers to preserve wintering habitat for this declining songbird.
This doesn't necessarily mean that the
coffee is organic or
shade - grown, but Rainforest Alliance farms do comply
with a variety of environmental, social, and sustainability standards.

In some regions of Latin America,

And in the rush to increase production, it caused a shift from traditional, sustainable
coffee growing methods (

shade of diverse native trees) to intense monocultures that require large inputs of fertilizer and pesticides which bring about a loss in biodiversity and quickly deplete the land.
There, you can read about Hispaniola's great biodiversity, including 30 endemic bird species; the importance of the island to birds that winter and migrate through the West Indies and breed in North America; and the critical role of
shade coffee in preserving habitat on an island
with a very high level of deforestation.
Therefore, this label can be slapped on any
coffee, including
coffee grown in the sun, or from farms
with only a few
shade trees This might be done out of either ignorance or a desire to capture the market (see more on this here), because these
coffees usually carry a price premium.
The certification gives growers access to gourmet market price premiums, and the timber and fruit trees on
shade coffee farms provide farmers
with additional income.
Therefore it is
with regret that I report that I feel the changes in the new standard regarding
shade criteria have negative effects and, due to lack of transparency, I can no longer recommend Rainforest Alliance certified
coffee to consumers specifically seeking «
shade grown»
coffee.
The Rainforest Alliance impacts report says 82 % of
coffee farms comply
with current
shade requirements.
Since taste is probably the ultimate catalyst for a
coffee purchase, diluting the «
shade coffee» market
with potentially lower quality beans not actually grown under
shade may potentially lower market demand for
shade coffee.
