Animal
shelter personnel can guess at the breed of an abandoned litter of pups, but they can not really tell much by looking at a roly poly bundle of fur
with the little round face and short legs.

The AVMA's new direction is more in line
with the National Animal Control Association (NACA) which in September 2010, issued the following policy statement: «NACA considers lethal injection of sodium pentobarbital, administered by competent, trained
personnel, to be the only method of choice utilized for humane euthanasia of animal
shelter dogs and cats.»
The department of agriculture shall not retain, contract
with, or otherwise utilize the services of the
personnel of any nonprofit organization for the purpose of inspection or licensing of any animal
shelter, pound, or dog pound, boarding kennel, commercial kennel, contract kennel, commercial breeder, hobby or show breeder, or pet shop under sections 273.325 to 273.357.
We also: educate potential owners about the breed and its special requirements to ensure an educated decision when selecting the breed as a pet; assist owners in solving problems
with their GSP in order to keep those dogs in their current home and encourage owners to use their breeders as a resource of support and information; and educate animal control officers and
shelter personnel on how to properly identify a GSP and of their particular personality and behavioral traits.
