Retinal ganglion cells downregulate gene expression and lose their axons
within the optic nerve head in a mouse glaucoma model Soto, I., Oglesby, E., Buckingham, B.P., Son, J.L., Roberson, E.D., Steele, M.R., Inman, D.M., Vetter, M.L., Horner, P.J. & Marsh - Armstrong, N. (2008) Journal of Neuroscience, 28:548 - 61.
We seek in this proposal to determine whether a particular type of imaging is capable of assessing and reporting on the integrity of sub-microscopic structures
within optic nerve fibers at an early stage of damage preceding their complete degeneration and loss from the eye.
We seek to determine whether a particular type of imaging, known as «polarization - sensitive» imaging, is capable of reporting on the integrity of sub-microscopic structures
within optic nerve fibers at an early stage of damage from glaucoma, preceding their complete degeneration and loss from the eye.

When I was 8 years old, it caused this disorder called hydrocephalus where the tumor is blocking the cerebral fluid in the brain and that automatically creates pressure
within the ventricles and it starts affecting different parts of the brain, and in my case it damaged my
optic nerve.
A healthy
optic nerve has axons transmitting information from the eye to the brain along the
nerve after considerable information processing and synaptic transmission between various cell types
within the retina.
Several specimens of the species, Fuxianhuia protensa (left), contain dark areas
within their eye stalks (see fossil, above right; gray areas in sketch, bottom right) that represent preserved clusters of neural tissue, including clumps along the
optic nerve (labeled 1 through 3 in the sketch) and the brain (lowermost mass).
They discovered that zinc is released from cells
within an hour after the
optic nerve is injured acutely — but they were surprised to find that it didn't come from retinal ganglion cells.
I have been working in the field of glaucoma research, on pathophysiology and diagnostics, for the past 18 years, and have become increasingly interested in the use of advanced imaging techniques for characterization of glaucomatous changes
within the retina and
optic nerve head.
On the surface, the disease appears relatively simple, with high pressure (intra-ocular pressure, or IOP)
within the eye associated with the death of cells in the retina and
optic nerve dysfunction.
Glaucoma is defined as increased pressure
within the eye that causes degenerative changes in the
optic nerve and retina with subsequent blindness.
They include diseases of the cornea (keratitis), the lens (cataract), increased pressure
within the eye (glaucoma), any disease which reduces retinal sensitivity to light impulses (retinal atrophy), or any disease which affects the
optic nerves or the sight - center of the brain (tumours, trauma).
Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA)-- a complex of congenital defects including choroidal hypoplasia, also called chorioretinal dysplasia — a thinning of the vascular tissue
within the eye),
optic disc coloboma / staphloma — incomplete development of the
optic nerve where it enters the eye, and retinal dysplasia or detachment — sections of retina, the vision reception tissue, that are not properly attached to the wall of the eye.
