without kefir grains... Buy some store bought (quality) kefir, and mix that with milk, roughly a 1/10 ratio.
Also, I have been allergic to dairy all of my life — also yogurt — also raw milk that has soured naturally (
without kefir grains)-- is it possible for someone like me to be able to tolerate milk kefir WITH the milk kefir grains?

you can start a really vigorous gluten free starter culture
without having to open a whole packet of yeast for just a few
grains by using a tablespoon or so of a fermented drink — kombucha, water
kefir (Whole Foods carries a coconut water
kefir that is very active) or if you have access to real unpasteurized sauerkraut you could probably use some of the liquid.
When there are too many
grains initially the
kefir gets very sour
without getting too thick.

i know that you should not use metal on the
grains — but isn't it OK to use a blender AFTER you have seperated the
grains for the next day supply and want to blend the
Kefir for today with fruit for instance — with a blender —
without the
grains??
This is what I do to sweeten or add flavor to my
kefir: in effect, I «finish» it
without the
grains, which might count as an answer to the query as well.
Without it, I might not have aquired the
Kefir grains from someone who appreciates their value.
Then I'll often leave the
kefir out on the counter for a while more (
without grains).
