This prospective cross-sectional study involved the recruitment of
women during the antenatal period, with subsequent follow - up of mothers who delivered healthy, term singleton infants, at 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum.
Control clusters: existing staff at the hospitals will be encouraged to set up their own systems to continue counselling of
women during the antenatal period, at delivery and during immunisation visits.

With the Federal Government implementing universal screening for depression
during the perinatal
period, there is an opportunity to promote the emphasis of
antenatal care of
women to focus not just on depression but also on parenting.
During pregnancy, rates of major depressive episodes, as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM - IV), range from 10 - 17 % 1 - 3 with significant variability among estimates.4 Additionally, one meta - analysis estimated that postpartum major or minor depression occurs in as many as 19.2 % of
women with the more narrowly defined major depression estimated to occur in 7.1 % of new mothers.4
Antenatal depression occurs in similar rates as in the postpartum
period, rates which are not significantly different from rates in non-pregnant or postpartum
women.
Second, fewer
women visited the clinic for
antenatal care
during the recruitment
period than expected, resulting in fewer than expected participants, hence the power of the study to detect differences in characteristics between smokers and non-smokers was reduced — the study only had adequate power to detect differences of about 23 % between groups.
