reformers over the past 25 years, I can confidently report that most will privately concede that much didn't
work out

First, the story's heroes — public school teachers who kept their heads down and did wonderful
work in their classroom — don't quite behave
as we might expect from those critical of the
reformers» agenda.

work with members of Congress and governors, to understand how a bill becomes a law, to provide moral support to
reformers as they fight it out in the states and at the local level.
The divide among education
reformers over how much regulation and oversight are needed for school choice to
work is highlighted
as reformers react to Betsy DeVos's nomination
as education secretary.
This year we are honoring Richard Strong who, for most of his career,
worked privately
as a teacher of teachers, educational
reformer, and researcher.
He describes the
work of school
reformers who wish to use business solutions or technology to fix the problems of education
as missing the point.
Because of her advocacy for school choice, her presence alongside Trump (
as well
as Bannon and Sessions) makes it even harder for Black, Latino, and Asian
reformers who champion choice to continue doing so without risk of damaging their
work with the men, women, and children who look like them.
These and other critiques have sparked a flurry of internal discussion and debate about the future of the coalition — a fairly healthy conversation
as reformers work to grow a more diverse movement, but one that has also left people divided over just how existential these problems really are.
Reformers believe that if teachers are subjected to «market forces,» such
as merit pay and job insecurity, they will
work harder to improve the education they provide for their students.
And finally,
reformers must embrace their
work as a moral force for lifting up communities the same way Micheaux did with his films.
It is also critical to get Beltway
reformers and social enterepreneurs such
as charter school operators to
work more - closely with grassroots advocates.
