While growing up in Chester County, Dr. Mitchell
worked on several
horse farms and also raised and
showed a small herd of alpacas.
She attended John Marshall High School and was active in 4 - H,
showing horses, playing on her high school tennis team and
working at Britton Road Veterinary Hospital, even through college.
Her 30 year career of
working with animals includes veterinary technician, trainer and handler of Arabian
show horses, Sea World educator and instructor and evaluator of guide dogs.

horses for the metaphor of wealth and the gap between the lives these heavily aestheticized and finely crafted paintings represent and the lives (alluded to in other rooms) that are deemed worth significantly less.

These visions of manliness play with props — women and
horses, and guitars respectively — although Shearer's take their cue not from advertising, but, as one of the only

Perhaps the
show's greatest surprise, though, is the modest scale of many of the
works: true - to - size apples and absinthe glasses, wispy stick figures made from splinters of canvas stretchers, kitchen fixtures repurposed as itsy - bitsy readymades, pebbles with faces carved into them, even a scaled - down
horse made as a toy for one of Picasso's grandchildren.

The
work on display at Frieze Masters, Quadrille, consists of material from a performance in 1975, in which six women dressed as
horses whilst performing a dressage dance at a
horse show.
In one of The Armory
Show's few overtly political moments, a powerful and timely painting by Titus Kaphar hangs on the booth's outer wall; the
work (The Cost of Removal, 2017) was inspired by President Trump's hanging of a portrait of Andrew Jackson in the Oval Office and sees Jackson on a
horse with the names of his slaves penned on shreds of canvas tacked on by rusted nails.
-- Finally emerging from semi-retirement after co-running Chelsea's Family Business Gallery with Massimiliano Gioni, Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan will be opening a new solo
show, «Kaputt,» at the Beyeler Foundation in early June, which is scheduled to run in conjunction with this year's Art Basel fair, and will feature a single
work inspired by a «classic subject in art history» that may or may not involve a
horse.
Speaking of the gallery, they have had extremely strong
showings of late, and I am thinking especially of the Deborah Butterfield exhibition, which preceded the Shaw exhibition, and which also featured trompe l'oeil in her painted bronze
works mimicking wooden sticks shaped as
horses.
