If you're a fan of Selma Blair, or even Max Beesley, perhaps you might like seeing them deliver good
work in a bad movie enough to watch it at least once, but it's quite a sacrifice you're making if you do.

The early stuff involving Sam Childers» evolution from
bad boy biker to reformed Christian is fairly interesting, but once he arrives
in Africa on his first goodwill trip, the
movie begins to lose steam as it falls into a repetitive cycle that jumps back and forth between Childers» home life
in Pennsylvania and doing God's
work in Africa.
You can see how all that plays out
in the first Sleepless trailer that debuted last fall, but now a clip from the
movie has debuted, showing us the tense, cheeky relationship that Jamie Foxx has with Michelle Monaghan, who
works in internal affairs and has no idea that Foxx is just pretending to be a corrupt cop as part of his job, and isn't actually as
bad as some of his colleagues.

There are minor detours through warmth and humanity (Descas displays real tenderness, which speaks to his and Denis splendid
working relationship and all the wonderful
movies they've made over the years) but the real meat of this is watching Binoche reach her limit with the
worst men
in France.
The
movie begins with a scene of meth cookers at
work in the dead of night; a masked man with a gun tells us that an American father and son who studied chemistry taught them to make the drug (shades of «Breaking
Bad»).
The
movie, then, edges into the territory of the Farrellys» post-Dumb & Dumber
work, when their high - concepts glinted with tragedy (think of Stuck on You's conjoined twins risking death or,
worse, solitude, by surgically separating), although
in and of themselves Harry and Lloyd can't support the weight of pathos.
It's really too
bad that some of Franco's best
work (I'm taking your word for it) is spent
in a
movie that so few people will see.
Yet, I must take the road less traveled as a
movie reviewer here because,
in truth, Xanadu is one of those films that, despite all of the naysayers and evidence of a
bad movie against it, still manages to
work its magic on me.
Like so many
movies profiled
in this series, «Joe» is a deeply personal
work, with a risky, even heedless style that baffled and alienated many viewers at the time, including critics who declared it one of the
worst films of its year.
You
work in metaphors through lights and composition, and the
worst thing for me is to see a
movie that doesn't have that.
Kaecilius
works for someone else far
worse than he, and
in the climax of Scott Derrickson's Phase Three
movie, one of the most powerful mystics
in the Marvel Universe makes his epic debut.
That doesn't mean the
movie's
bad —
in fact, quite the contrary — but while the decision to pair off the various crew members is a clever idea, it takes away from the group dynamic that
worked so well
in the first two films.
It's because of this that I feel incredibly sorry for Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, since they do try to
work with what they got, and they're aren't necessarily that
bad in the
movie.
Alba had a whole lot more to say on the subject of
working in film, including some choice bits about how first time directors are responsible for her

«One thing we can't do

bad things can't get away with them; the censorship you have to deal with is the challenge of

bad guys, successors to the Empire), didn't
work for us.

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES is not a
bad movie but after the epic build - up
in THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG, we're thrown bang
in the middle of the action and, for me, it doesn't
work very well.
