works best about Insidious, which is about as adoring a love letter to Tobe Hooper's Poltergeist as a good
film can get, is how it takes
horror flick concepts both old and relatively new and mixes them up, blender - style, and the result is a 95 - minute fun - time ass - kicker that has as much love for the genre as it does
in making you pounce out of your seat.
That is exactly the kind of person that makes a
film for longtime B - movie producer Roger Corman (Death Race 2000, 1960's The Little Shop of
Horrors), a man who has
worked with some of the biggest names
in Hollywood before they were big.
Today marks the birthday of legendary Italian director Mario Bava, who is undoubtedly best known for his major achievements
in the «giallo»
horror genre (although he created
works ranging from spaghetti westerns to science fiction
films as well).
Composer Michael Giacchino wins two awards —
Film Music Composition of the Year and Best Original Score for a Fantasy / Science Fiction /
Horror Film — both for his
work on the third
film in the blockbuster Planet of the Apes trilogy, «War for the Planet of the Apes».
Baker protégé Rob Bottin's
work on that
film was arguably equal to that of his mentor (who left Bottin
in charge of The Howling «s effects after he exited the project for the bigger - budget American Werewolf), and yet the Academy couldn't even be bothered to nominate him (or, perhaps more likely, its members simply couldn't bring themselves to watch a low - budget
horror movie not put out by a major studio).
But right now, she's consumed by her
work in Berlin on Gore Verbinski's new
horror film, A Cure for Wellness, alongside American actor Dane DeHaan, who has quickly gained accolades of his own for playing iconoclasts (James Dean
in Life and Lucien Carr
in Kill Your Darlings).
Its origins, however, were modest: While
working on his epochal 2006 eco -
horror / giant - monster movie hit The Host (the highest grossing South Korean
film to date), Bong happened to wander into his favorite comic book store
in Seoul.
And a sequence
in the middle of the
film,
in which a nude Alexandra Delli Colli, having engaged
in bondage play with a stranger, begins to suspect that her partner is the Ripper and starts
working to untie those knots as he slumbers next to her, is a terrific
horror set - piece.
In its tone, acting, location
work, music and inexorably mounting suspense, this is an exemplary
horror film, apart from the detail that they're not usually subtitled «A Christmas Tale» and tell about wild Santas.
Its
horror and thriller
films are bursting with creativity, originality and a unique voice
in a flooded international market, set apart by
works such as Bong Joon - ho's «The Host,» Jang Cheol - soo's «Bedevilled» and Kim Jee - woon's «I Saw the Devil.»
The
film's opening, with the bandmates waking up
in a field
in their beater of a van, instantly evokes The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and speaks to archetypal dread: the feeling of a boat adrift on a limitless sea that these backwoods
horrors, when they
work, suggest.
The fact that he previously specialised
in horror films is put to good use here, and if anything his harsh, industrial
work reminded me of Brad Fiedel's Terminator scores.
While most automatically assumed that the new script would be some sort of
horror - comedy, based on Green and McBride's inclination to aim for laughs
in their
works, the latter tells Cinema Blend that the new
film will carry the same frightening tone as the original «Halloween»
films.
by
horror pundits, what they're forgetting is that despite their pedigree, both McBride and Gordon Green have spent enough time
in other genres to know how
films not of the «ha ha» variety
work.
