working on changing myself over on this however I try VERY hard to buy only
whole wheat things, and
more so multi
grains I have bought bulgur and wheat germ and when I bake I use oatmeal, bulgur, wheat germ or flax instead of the white flour and with
whole wheat flour.
And while some baked goods might
work best with a finer,
more refined white flour, it's nice to know there is a world of nutty, nutritious and deliciously dark
whole grains out there being mindfully grown and ground.
Whole grain flours require
more moisture than all - purpose flour, and you have to be careful when kneading not to
work too much extra flour into the dough.
Whole, intact
grains are always better for us than ground
grains because they
work their way through the body
more slowly and impact blood sugar levels
more slowly as a result.
The new nutrition guidelines, calling for bigger portions of green, orange and red vegetables, fewer starchy vegetables such as potatoes,
more whole grains, and a lot less salt, have been in the
works for years at the Institute of Medicine.
And we're
working to reauthorize our child nutrition legislation that will make significant new investments to revamp our school meals and improve the food that we offer in those school vending machines, so that we're serving our kids less sugar, salt and fat, and
more vegetables, fruits and
whole grains.

I have been living and
working in India for the past 43 years and have witnessed a transition in cities (even villages and small towns) toward
more air pollution and also big dietary changes from
whole grains and healthy unrefined oils to white flour, polished rice, excessive sugar and unlimited availability of milk (white revolution).
I hope that once I'm sure of my food choices (kind of «mediterranean diet»,
more whole grains, fresh fruit and veg and lean protein) I can
work things out so that I do both.

Fiber supplements and the old adage to «eat
more fiber» in the form of
whole grains and
whole wheat breads did NOT
work for me!
These tips include making positive changes to your lifestyle one day at a time, eating
more fresh fruits, vegetables and
whole grains, avoiding processed foods, reading labels and planning what you are going to eat at home, in restaurants and at
work.
Whole grains like rolled oats, brown rice, or buckwheat burn
more body fat because they take
more work for your body to break down than processed
grains like white flour.
