It wasn't until four years later that Jackson Pollock began
working on the drip paintings that made him famous around the world.

Drip Paintings and Selected

Jaison places his canvas flat
on the table and uses a modern painting technique of
dripped -
on paint texture, which gives his
work a gracefully energetic appearance.
As always, in many of her
works, words accompany drawings: visionary poems, decadent images floating
on covers of burnt books, wax
drippings on tarot cards, simulacra of an otherworldly power, evocations of magical rituals.
The
work proceeds to step entirely outside of their final iteration by exposing uncontrolled stains and
drips of bright green and red paint
on the canvas» thick edges.
Abstract Expressionism certainly included dense
work on a modest scale, such as the pioneering
drips by Janet Sobel or Shimmering Substance by Jackson Pollock.
Taylor's «B» is angled to remind us that it has been applied
on the flat surface of the picture, not
on the door in illusionistic space; the white
drips on the floor could be in the room itself, or a result of his vigorous
work on the canvas.
I love most types of painting, from super-realism through to minimalism, but a good expressive
work with paint slapped
on and

Peter Fox Expanding
on his signature style of
drip painting, Peter Fox's spilled paint
works have taken
on bold gestural movements.
Sound
on Sound will feature three major paintings and four large scale (6 - foot tall)
works on paper, the latter pitting
dripped or rolled paint against silk - screened backgrounds.
When, at first,
drips extend the outline of a curve, they arise from the action of gravity
on a picture leaning vertically against the wall as he
worked, not from brushwork or chance.
On one
work, a sagging blob of enamel paint kissed the lower left corner, and a 4 - inch - long
drip hung off...
The eight
works» contents — an oversized «x», a confetti of dollar - bill signs, a
dripping map, a Chuck Taylor sole atop a pyramid — held so much depth
on their own.
Jackson Pollock's
dripping paint onto a canvas laid
on the floor is a technique that has its roots in the
work of André Masson, Max Ernst, and David Alfaro Siqueiros.
Historians have argued that the
work stands as a precedent both for the artist's own performances in the 1960s and for the explosion of performative
work in that decade.20 Paul Schimmel astutely places Automobile Tire Print
on a trajectory of performative
works based
on the notion of capturing an indexical trace, reaching back to Pollock's
drip paintings, moving up through Rauschenberg's blueprints, and
on to Piero Manzoni's Lineas (1959 — 61), Paul McCarthy's video Face Painting — Floor, White Line (1972, fig. 5), and Ulay and Marina Abramovic's 1977 performance Relation in Movement, in which they drove a van in a circle for sixteen hours, leaving a circle of oil
drips and tire marks
on a public plaza in Paris.21
The discussion hints
on some themes explored in Coupland's earlier writing — including the books Generation X, Microserf, and Life After God — and seems echoed in most of his visual
work, from the pixelated «Welcome to the 21st Century «to the
dripping computer colour - heads in «Pop - Heads `.
Centering
on 1934 - 1954, Pollock's
work moved from mythical, primal figures and scenes, to imagery that combines elements of representation and abstraction, to the «
drip» paintings that Pollock is now known for.
That's the thing about Benglis: her
work confronts you with its bodily reality, the process of its construction visible in every
drip and smear, but it still fires your imagination, takes you off
on tangents.
She painted the
works on the wall, vertically, even if the finished canvas had horizontal stripes, in order to control the
drips.
The exhibition brings together sculpture,
works on Mylar, and the artist's largest presentation of wall panels seen in New York, all of which are created by layered
drips of material that form both their physicality and imagery.
Continuing his assault
on corporate identities and what they represent, the show features his signature
dripping brand logos as well as other mix - media
works.
Deadening as life - draining opioids, even the
works that span yards of walls with the obsessive statistics and directives of unbridled oppression start to
work on you like the
drip -
drip abuses of communist rule that disregarded, disrupted, and destroyed entire communities — day after day, year after year.
Perhaps I'm being petty, but having read many press releases like this one, for abstract
work not too dissimilar in its «variety of approaches», often a bit of hardness, with a bit of contrived brushiness, masked off, contrasted with a thin pink line or some nice
drips on the edges, you start to wonder to what extent the familiarity and mundanity in the writing and the
work are inextricable from each other.
Working first with oil paints and later acrylic, Jenkins poured paint directly
on the canvas, allowing it to
drip, bleed, and pool, as well as manipulating it with an ivory knife.
The collectors who had bought Pollock's colorful
drip fields, earning him the unfortunate nickname «Jack the Dripper,» didn't know what to make of the black -
on - black
works.
This image of the
work turned
on its side, made from an archival slide, documents the
drips of white paint that marked the
work's surface until Rauschenberg covered it with a fresh coat of black paint.
In the
work entitled Bed (1955), Robert Rauschenberg assembled a composite of his own bedclothes, applied to it a broad traverse of gesticulated,
dripping pigment, and mounted the whole
on a wooden support.
The new layer, applied primarily to the upper left quarter of the painting, was intended to cover small
drips of white paint that had accidentally fallen
on the
work while the artist's studio was being painted.
In his
works, we zoom in for blades of grass, shag rugs, tweeds,
drips of water, pointillist wallpaper, dots and dashes of red and blue, tapestry - like expanses of green -
on - green.
