My friend is a professional faux painter and uses a clear coat that she says would
work over the chalk paint.

It wouldn't be ideal for a full piece to use
chalk paint over the wax because I would be worried about adherence, but when doing an accent like a whitewash, the incredible adherence of
chalk paint works just fine.
I parked myself in front of the TV, plugged in a Friends marathon and got to
work refastening the seat cushions & rubbing in a coat of Annie Sloan's Clear Furniture Wax
over the
chalk paint to protect everything.

over with a clear poly finsh which of them

I have only used Annie Sloan wax
over her
chalk paint, but I will guess that it would
work over regular
paint too.
I would use fine / medium grit sandpaper or very fine steel wool (SOS or Brillo Pads
work well)
over it to remove the rust, clean the surface well, then use
chalk paint over it.
Since this piece is newly finished I can't say how it'll hold up long - term, but Annie Sloan
Chalk Paint
works great when
painting over fabric (with a little water sprayed on - no water on the leather though).

We got to
work, tearing out carpet,
painting walls, putting in wood flooring, baseboard, etc... One of the items we came across was a super old, worn out, 18 × 24 ″ blackboard that was so worn out and used, I could hardly get the
chalk to make a mark without going
over and
over it.
Should still
work over oil based
paints but not
over chalk paint that is unsealed.
I've used polyurethane
over chalk paint and polycrylic (messy to
work with too many drips etc), but not wax, from what I've read it isn't the best choice for a high traffic area or piece?
I had not used it
over chalk paint up until I did it and I wanted to be able to tell readers about
working with it.
