In my role
as a
birth and family educator at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, WA, I was approached by Dr. John Gottman, along with two other colleagues (Carolyn Pirak, MSW and Rosalys Peel, RN) to create, implement, and train couples and
professionals in research - based information about what
works and doesn't
work in relationships — and pivotal to the Bringing Baby Home Program — the profound effects the transition to parenthood has on familial relationships.
This competency - based curriculum trains and supports families in five categories: protecting and nurturing children, meeting children's developmental needs and addressing developmental delays, supporting children's relationships with their
birth families, connecting children to safe, nurturing relationships intended to last a lifetime, and
working as a member of a
professional team.
As an adoption
professional with Family Connections, I would encourage
birth parents to
work with an adoption agency that supports open adoption options and consider having some form of an openness with the adoptive family.
