Intimate Abstraction - March 7th - April 5th 2013 The title of this exhibition derives partly from the size of the
gallery and the choice of
smaller works to include
in it, but more importantly from the layers of meaning
in the word intimate.
There are some caveats: the attempts to cover
smaller works on paper and allied photography are too bitty, the rather arbitrary mixed selection of later
works in the last
gallery confusing, although even here there is a bonus
in a four - panel burst of dappled blues and yellows by the underrated Joan Mitchell.
If painting as a practice is viewed with far more skepticism today, the sense of conversation evoked by the
works on this wall — and
in a
smaller room off the main
gallery, which is also filled with the art of Schloss's friends and acquaintances — rings eerily familiar.

small and precise experiments with color.
California (Sacremento to be exact), native, Liz Larner presents a new body of
work at Regen Projects
in Los Angeles, but what is happily off - kilter about this bold, sculptural presentation, is that coupled with it viewers find a side
gallery in which an earlier selection of notably
smaller, object - based
works acts as an unusual and telling counterpoint.
The
gallery continues to
work in collaboration with institutions, large and
small, developing partner relationships and initiating exhibitions and projects throughout the United States and abroad.
I'm sure this is
in no
small part down to so many incredible exhibitions of painters at museums and
galleries at the moment: Tschabalala Self at Parasol Unit, Djordje Ozbolt at Hauser & Wirth Somerset, Robert Rauschenberg at Tate Modern, the David Hockney exhibition at Tate Britain, and the group exhibition of painters «House
Work» at Victoria Miro to name a few.
I have two films that portray games played by girls
in two adjoining
galleries and
in two
smaller spaces, annexed to these large film installations, are shorter
works that are all filmed
in industrial locations.
And rather than visiting individual
galleries — and perhaps discovering new talent — collectors are focusing on market - tested trophy
works carried by major dealers; are sometimes buying from Instagram or other online images without seeing the
work in person; and are less willing to gamble on the emerging artists represented by
small and midsize
galleries.
In the somewhat
smaller works of «Safe House,» at the Mary Boone
Gallery, Ms. Abney messes with language more, riving relatively normal images of black life.

in Black and White @ The Courtauld
Gallery They may be
small and only made up of shades of grey, but these
works carry serious weight.
The 40
works on display
in the solo exhibition at the Jamesport, NY venue fill the walls, stacked and nestled into the corners of the
small gallery.
In another
work, animatronic totems spray
small blots of gray paint onto a white
gallery wall.
In most cases, artist - run
galleries, project spaces, and newer,
smaller galleries will be grateful for your business, and you won't have to jump through hoops to
work with them.
Davenport's
work has been exhibited
in London and throughout the United States including «Within a Circuit» at NARS Foundation, «Brown Paper Zine &
Small Press Fair» at Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts, and «Displacement» at Ugly Duck
gallery.
For his second solo outing at the
gallery, White will exhibit large - scale oil paintings as well as
smaller works on paper,
in which he continues his examination of the interstices between representation, abstraction and the tactile sphere of everyday life.
In this latest exhibition, the
gallery states: «Important late
works are juxtaposed with a
small selection of
works from 1950 and 1951.»
The
small number and size of the
works amplify the large and open space of that
gallery and stand
in stark contrast to the monumentally scaled
works by Clyfford Still on view
in adjacent
galleries.
