THINK Literacy includes Reading
Workshop (independent reading and small - group direct instruction); Guided Reading (students read more -
challenging books, with help from
teachers); Read Aloud (
teachers read books aloud, and students discuss the major ideas); and Shared Text (close reading of short texts, emphasizing central meaning and literary techniques).
More recently I've also been designing
workshops and courses for
teachers and administrators interested in project -,
challenge - or problem - based learning.
These talks,
workshops and debates were designed to help
teachers to plan lessons, find a better job, improve their professional skills or understand some of the topical
challenges facing schools.
Because professional development has historically taken the form of coursework, advanced degree programs, and
workshops that are led by
teacher education faculty, this change will be another stiff
challenge to the status quo.
Institutes and
workshop topics targeted all audiences and needs from a session on the
challenges of implementing GLBTQ children's literature in the elementary classroom to a session on an innovative
teacher evaluation matrix that included quality indicators for culturally responsive teaching.
The committee was also responsible for finding appropriate
workshop facilitators to present these strategies at the beginning of the year and for arranging additional monthly meetings during the school day, once a month, in which
teachers could discuss their
challenges and successes implementing the selected strategies.
The school uses a «personalized learning» model in which each student spends a portion of the day (often half a day or more) learning online, and a portion of the day in «
workshops» with in - person
teachers focused on higher - order thinking skills, high - priority or
challenging topics, small - group discussions, and projects.
This
workshop enabled veteran
teachers and instructional leaders to discuss the opportunities and
challenges inherent to founding a new public charter school.
