of nature, this does not mean that we can ignore the environmental needs
of the
world or just consume and destroy the natural
resources of this plant in any way we want.
The Holy See might also have taken a leaf from John Paul's 1991 social encyclical Centesimus Annus and boldly urged the view that
human beings are the basic
resource for development, because the source
of wealth in the modern
world is
human creativity.
But it does seem clear to me that we need to begin with a vision
of a
world community (1) consisting
of a population within the biological carrying capacity
of the planet (2) organized politically and economically in ways that provide to all
human beings equal access to the means
of material fulfillment and (3) organized technologically in ways that (4) neither exhaust essential natural
resources of earth nor (5) upset the delicate balances
of nature which make the environment capable
of supporting life.
Suppose we begin with the dawning possibility that it is now possible to produce enough
of the basic material essential for all
human beings, given the proper technological innovations plus access to the
world's
resources on a globally integrated basis.
Therefore, among the central identifying characteristics
of the followers
of Jesus would be involvement in the struggle effectively to bring about the Kingdom
of God, «on earth as it is in heaven,» where freedom, fellowship, justice, responsible love reign and where people live as brothers / sisters, equitably sharing the
resources of God's creation and being accountable for their own
human future and that
of the created
world.

world of the twenty - first century, Adam Smith's «wealth
of nations» resides, not so much in stuff (as in natural
