world of real estate and finance into a
new age of transparency.
In reality, «We Renounce the Old
World» fits quite comfortably with the spirit
of novus ordo seclorum — «a
new order
of the
ages» — the motto stamped on our nation's Great Seal.
Reasons for this outcome were multiple: though
world membership had doubled during Neal C. Wilson's 12 years in office, his authoritarian management style had alienated several constituencies; he had been identified with several demoralizing theological and financial crises; his
age, 70, was against him in spite
of his astounding vigor, and a widespread sense
of deep crisis and need for
new directions had gone unanswered.
In this
new world of instant and multiple - choice media, we also tend to consider
age ratings much less seriously.
The predominant mood
of Protestantism at the turn
of the century was positive, optimistic and liberal — and its leaders welcomed the modernism heralded by the
new age: the spirit
of rationality and scientific inquiry, the growth
of social awareness, and the sense
of an expanding
world.
These explainers addressed the nation's
new role in
world affairs, the threats and possibilities
of the atomic
age, racial segregation and the importance
of emerging technologies.
By a divine invasion
of the
world, stopping history in mid-course and suddenly inaugurating the

But God has been speaking in secular ways to men and women through the
ages; he has led them into more
of the truth about the structure and functioning
of the
world in which they live; he is at work in the areas
of human study, explorations research, and enquiry, which have given us this «
new»
world.
We do not need to reject or twist defined doctrines in order to present our faith credibly in this
new age of discovery, neither do we need to distance ourselves from the scientific consensus about the natural
world.
The whole Judeo - Christian heritage, from whose roots the
new world has sprung, may be regarded as the medium by which God the Father has been leading the human race to its coming
of age.
The test
of whether man in the
new world has come
of age is seen first
of all in his ability to shoulder full responsibility for his life, and secondly in the recognition
of all that he owes to the fatherhood
of God to whom is due praise and thanksgiving.
It was this life
of the
new age and the potential
of Christians for this life, now, in their community and
world, that Paul is calling for here.
Paul clearly expected the end
of the present
age and the coming
of the
new world to occur in his own lifetime.
The anticipation
of the end
of the
age, along with the hope for a
new world to come, has had a long history in Judeo - Christian tradition.
To the extent that the
new world may be described as man's coming
of age, we must be ready for all the refinements it necessitates for the way we talk about God.
The discoveries and scientific creations
of recent years in the field
of nuclear energy, transforming our period into a
new power
age, are directly traceable to the discoveries
of radioactive elements by Becquerel and the Curies, inaugurating the
new physics.9 A
new depth
of relations and energy revealed in both earlier and more recent experiments has routed the
world - view
of mechanism which Newton and his followers through the nineteenth century had come to take for granted.
The Hare Krishna chanters see the
world at the end
of the materialistic Kali - Yuga, the last cycle in a four - cycle sequence, and predict the coming
of a
new age of peace and happiness.
It would be too bad if just as Christianity is becoming» for the first time» a truly
world religion, we encased ourselves in the confines
of a passing
age instead
of embracing the dangerous dawning
of a
new one.»
Perhaps, as John XXIII proposed, the Universal Declaration is a sign
of a
new world community in which the religious traditions will find common ground for resolutely resisting the dehumanizing forces
of this
age.
In Living Faithfully in a Fragmented
World: Lessons for the Church from MacIntyre's «After Virtue» (1998), Wilson responds to moral philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre, who concludes his celebrated 1991 critique
of modernity by calling for «the construction
of local forms
of community within which civility and the intellectual and moral life can be sustained through the
new dark
ages which are already upon us....
This corrective also served the purpose
of presenting to the church a
new understanding
of itself and
of the autonomous modern
world, and it reminded us what it means to be a Christian in the
world come
of age.
In his book The
New Essence
of Christianity, Hamilton says that «My essay as a whole is deeply indebted to Bonhoeffer, and may be taken as a theological response to the coming
of age of the
world as he has analyzed it.
(5) There is the dawn
of the
new day or
age — a
world in which French grandeur is a bit more evident, in which corporation profits are a little higher; or a
world that marks the failure
of such ideals and the triumph
of other dreams.
This corrective also served the purpose
of presenting to the church a
new understanding
of itself and
of autonomous modern
world, and it reminded us what it means to be a Christian in the
world come
of age.»
After
World War II the executive branch
of government argued that it needed absolute power in foreign affairs because (1) in a nuclear
age, when missiles can make the trip from Moscow to
New York in 20 minutes, there is no time to consult Congress and the people, and (2) the «secret, subversive» techniques
of the communists can be challenged only by subversion and secrecy on our part.
Russia is facing similar problems
of spiritual order after it borrowed some
of the social and cultural patterns
of the Western
world in the
New Age period.
As to this Morris Markey magazine article, Bill Wilson said: «To our great delight, Morris soon hammered out an article which he titled «Alcoholics and God»» (Alcoholics Anonymous Comes
of Age [
New York: Alcoholics Anonymous
World Services, 1958], p. 177; see also Dick B., The Golden Text
of AA., pp. 70 - 71).
The
new world, however, bears unmistakable marks
of the
new age that he ushered in.
