FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — April 28, 2016 — First quarter seasonality combined with an overall disinterested customer base led to an annual decline of 14.7 %
in worldwide tablet shipments during the first quarter of 2016 (1Q16).
Research firm IDC today announced its preliminary estimates
of worldwide tablet shipments for the second quarter of 2013, finding that Apple's share of the market has fallen 1/3.
Apple's iPad led the charge as
total worldwide tablet shipments hit a record 52.5 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012, according to IDC's preliminary data from its Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker, but its market share continued to slide due to competition from Samsung.
As a result,
worldwide tablet shipments plunged 12 percent year - over-year to 67 million units in Q4 2014, which research firm Canalys says marks its first ever decline after several quarters of slowing demand.
The IDC study
showing worldwide tablet shipments show that the tablet industry in general is growing by leaps and bounds, with Amazon coming in at 6 million units sold and third on the list and Barnes & Noble being the only company in the top 5 to have had less of an impact on the market than it did Q4 one year ago.
IDC
said worldwide tablet shipments from all vendors combined declined 11.7 percent in the first quarter on a year - over-year basis, making the iPad's gains in sales, revenue, and market share all the more impressive.
Meanwhile, IDC reports that the consumer market for tablets is shrinking,
with worldwide tablet shipments falling 5.9 percent in the first quarter of 2015 (see full story here).
On the other hand, a report this week by IDC said that
worldwide tablet shipments will continue to stagnate, even as the popularity of two - in - one devices increases.

the worldwide tablet shipments in Q3 2016.
IDC predicted that the tablet market would recover by 2018, but the fact is that in Q2 2017
the worldwide tablet shipments declined once again, this time by 3.4 % on a yearly basis.
Last year,
worldwide tablet shipments totaled 70.9 million units.
