worth of shareholder proposals at the three largest U.S.
oil companies — ExxonMobil, Chevron and ConocoPhillips — to see how they responded to investor concerns about climate
change.
Mr Halfon summarised his argument for ConHome this morning, so there's not much need to re-state the case for an investigation into the
oil market, but it is
worth noting the response
of the newly appointed Minister
of State for Energy and Climate
Change, John Hayes.
Many
of his mistakes are big ones: he bungles the issues involving reserves and resources that are critical to his core argument about
oil remaining cheap; he drastically misleads his readers about the extent to which sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from coal - burning have been reduced; he trivializes the climate -
change risks from coals carbon dioxide emissions by suggesting we know the impacts will be
worth only 0.64 cents per kilowatt - hour.
To be fair, though, If he flushes and uses synthetic on next
oil change, 5000 miles will still just produce 5000 miles
worth of contaminants.

It's
worth remembering that over the course
of, say, 7k miles your
oil changes viscosity anyway.
That's still a heady amount for what seems like a simple service, though it's
worth noting that Volkswagen provides free
oil changes within the first 12 months or 10,000 miles
of ownership.

In a possible scenario

Friends

worth it as the impact
of climate
change has to be faced.

According to a recent report by Friends
of the Earth U.S. and
Oil Change International, ECAs fund almost $ 40 billion
worth of fossil fuel projects each year.
On that basis, the report concludes that while continued
oil sands production will make it very hard for Canada to meet its national emission reduction targets — which again it's
worth pointing out, are in line with those
of the US and far far below what science says is needed to minimize the impacts
of climate
change — on a global basis «elimination
of oil sands GHG emissions will not eliminate or substantially lessen the immense challenge facing the world to reduce GHG emissions.»
We also have to take into account that the current EPA methodology is stricter than it was before, so today's MPGs are actually «
worth more» than MPGs from many years ago, and finally, these types
of changes are usually non-linear, so it's still possible for even more rapid improvements to take place (thanks to new technology, an
oil shock, a carbon tax, economies
of scales on plug - in vehicles, etc).
