Most often, when the authors of Scripture want to
write about eternal life, they use the words «eternal life» (or «everlasting life» in some translations).

John's baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins was the Jewish baptism of repentance which I
wrote a few posts
about, and which has nothing to do with receiving
eternal life, and everything to do with the repentance of Israel as a nation so that she can be restored to her rightful place among the nations as God promised in Scripture.
That is why in my article above, I tried to only refer to «
eternal life» when I was
writing about what could not be lost.
In 1 Peter 3:21, Peter is not
writing about how to gain
eternal life.
When you read in the Bible
about proclaiming Jesus as Lord, following Jesus, taking up your cross,
eternal reward, inheriting the Kingdom,
life in the Spirit, faithful
living, and on and on and on, the author who
wrote that text was primarily thinking of how we should
live as followers of Jesus so that we can experience the
life God meant for us to
live.
I am attending seminary and love to study the Bible and so my enjoyment of the Bible leads me to
write about the grace of God, the unconditional love, and how a person can gain
eternal life.
Remember, Paul is not talking in Ephesians
about how to receive
eternal life; He is
writing to Christians
about how to
live out the
life in Christ they already have.
Here is what he
wrote about how D. L. Moody used John 5:24 to show him that he could be sure he had
eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ:

They are discipleship verses, not verses
about how to receive
eternal life (which is what I was
writing about in my post).
Recently I
wrote a post on the All
About Eve blog that the theological invitation «Believe in Jesus for
eternal life» is more concretely summed up with the statement «God loves you.»
You see, when John wanted to
write about how to receive
eternal life, he tells us close to 100 times that it is simply by believing in Jesus Christ for it.

wrote about the popular misunderstanding of the word «gospel,» that it refers only to receiving
eternal life and going to heaven when you die.I then argued that the gospel is everything related to Jesus Christ.
