It's actually kind of impressive how far out of his way screenwriter Nicholas Stoller went to not come up with a coherent
story, and then you remember that he's
written some
funny movies that had a
story (the two most recent Muppets films, for starters), and that's when the feeling of being cheated sets in.
But his latest feature, «Suburbicon,» provides reason for hope: for one thing, it's based on an»80s Coen brothers screenplay (rewritten by Clooney and his long - time
writing and producing partner Grant Heslov) and it's a dark James Cain «Double Indemnity»
story starring Clooney's «Oceans» co-star Matt Damon as a hapless miscreant — no one plays dumb and
funny better — and an adept cast of smart comedy actors, including Julianne Moore as his wife and Oscar Isaac as the suspicious insurance man hounding them.
His screenplays are tight,
funny, well -
written and fun, but his
stories can be cliched and predictable.
Though the
story is old hat, the sharp
writing and uproariously
funny cast make it feel new again, and every scene feels fresh.

In fact, the movie as a whole is much
funnier than you might expect, using comedy to break up the monotonous nature of the
story, and it works remarkably well thanks to a combination of smart
