Selections from Albers's own writings, including classic texts such as «On My Painting,» «Color» and «On My Homage to the Square,» mingle with essays by well - known Albers scholars Nicholas Fox Weber («Minimal Means, Maximum Effect») and Jeannette Redensek («On Josef Albers» Painting Materials and Techniques»); meditations by Norwegian artist Dag Erik Elgin («Preparing for Painting to Happen»), Eva Diaz («Jailbreaking Geometric Abstraction,») and Doug Ashford («Dear Josef»); and a collage sequence by Andrea Geyer that pays homage to Albers's prints.
With his roots in printmaking and Surrealism, British artist Stanley William Hayter's (1901 — 1988) theoretical writings on automatism and the expressive abstraction of his own work were a formative influence on Pollock and other abstract expressionists via his printmaking studio, Atelier 17, where Hayter taught Pollock and other well known artists including Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Max Ernst, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Jacques Lipchitz and Alberto Giacometti.
Using William Gibson's writings on atemporality as a point of departure, Hoptman culled canvases registering traces of earlier styles and times — from Kazimir Malevich's utopian abstraction to Barnett Newman's heroic zips to the title of a Lucio Fontana painting — in sometimes overt, sometimes clandestine ways.

Taking influence from Robert Smithson's writings on deep time, as well as Taoist philosopher Chuang Tzu's The Inner Chapters, Kim interweaves intimacy with vastness to encompass both the specific (the bruise, the exploding supernova), as well as qualities of non-referential abstraction.
