Unfortunately, in many cases the complex
issues related to a work's provenance and condition, coupled with van Gogh's own idiosyncrasies — in terms of his artistic
output, his lifestyle, and the vast number of letters he
wrote — have conspired to make it virtually impossible to arrive at a definitive judgment.
