write about whatever the hell they want, just to get a rise out of people (it
's fitting that a performance
artist is behind the «National Anthem» plot.

artist René Magritte (Nov. 21) both got «doodles» makes you wonder if some well - placed «Googler»
is a Paul Simon fan — he
wrote songs
about both.
Well, today
is Amanda's birthday, which seems like the perfect time to feature this piece she
wrote about what it means to
be a local
artist in a global world.
Then my repressed struggling
artist side entered the dialogue and ranted quietly
about how I
was meant to
be writing!
In his novel Bluebeard, Kurt Vonnegut
writes about how back in the old days (before advances in transportation, trade, communication), there would
be one
artist or one songwriter or one storyteller in a village of, say, 1,000 people.
Knowing I have something of a national platform, I've
been thinking a lot
about how to use it more effectively — perhaps by focusing my best op - ed
writing on one or two and using the rest of my influence to amplify those church leaders, activists, and
artists doing the good work of justice all around the world.
I have had this experience three times now, on three different occasions, in admittedly similar circumstances, but not similar enough to explain the coincidence: I
am speaking from a podium to a fairly large audience on the topics of — to put it broadly — evil, suffering, and God; I have
been talking for several minutes
about Ivan Karamazov, and
about things I have
written on Dostoevsky, to what seems general approbation; then, for some reason or other, I happen to remark that, considered purely as an
artist, Dostoevsky
is immeasurably inferior to Tolstoy; at this, a single pained gasp of incredulity breaks out somewhat to the right of the podium, and I turn my head to see a woman with long brown hair, somewhere in her middle thirties, seated in the third or fourth row, shaking her head in wide - eyed astonishment at my loutish stupidity.
In other words,
are worship
artists pressured to
write songs that will sell instead of ones that
are honest
about their doubts and fears?
It
's also why I invite comments and critiques from faithful collaborators — pastors, scholars,
artists, scientists, doctors, parents, blog commenters, and editors — who often know more
about a given topic than I and whose insights improve my
writing by miles.
I know there
's lots of expert advice out there - and different educational theories -
about drawing with little ones (I
wrote quite a bit
about drawing with kids in The Creative Family), but while it
's fresh on my mind, I thought I'd share a few simple thoughts on what I've found really helpful for the littlest of
artists.
I love to blog but I
am a little shy personally so I try to
write about myself as a mom / person /
artist in a way that I hope shares a common ground with visitors.
