Putting aside biases against
employment gaps and the priorities reflected in opting out of the work force, how much does the work change in five
years?

employment law practitioners and 2018 looks full of challenges too, with gender pay
gap reporting and data protection regulation being top of many agendas in the first quarter.
The economy experienced such a significant downtime in the past
years, making it more common to see job - seekers that have
employment gaps on their resume.
It is best to use
years instead of months when indicating the duration of period you spent on the activities you engaged during your
employment gaps.
If you have little applicable experience, a significant job
gap or a period of
employment that is not representative of your desired position (that
year you spent «finding yourself» while taking odd waitressing gigs and living in your parents basement, anyone) the chronological resume can highlight these types of deficiencies, which can lead to the need for lengthy explanations in your cover letter, initial phone screening or in person interview.
Perhaps you've been struggling to find steady work in your field for the past few
years or your resume has some glaring
employment gaps.
It's not uncommon for recent graduates to take their
gap year post-study in an effort to remedy this situation — something which The Telegraph is calling a «career crisis,» as the moment of unemployment is prolonged as graduates «opt for a «quick - fix» job or spend time travelling,» rather than seeking out
employment based on their degree.
Interviewers are most certainly going to ask about any
gaps in
employment on your resume, especially ones that are a
year or longer.
Another good tip is to only state the
year of
employment, rather than the months you commenced and left a position — but don't be tempted to extend dates of
employment to paper over a
gap (see number 2 for more detail!).
Many health systems have filled the

If you feel that the prospective employer should really be made aware of your particular situation and the reason for the

years, and held a number of different positions, there's nothing wrong with scaling back the detail — which could be an easy way to take care of a few
gaps.
If you have a large
employment gap on your resume because of a disability (more than a
year), try to fill it in with something like volunteering, continuing education, or professional development.
For
years, creating a skills based resume has been recommended as the best way to camouflage
employment gaps or lack of job - relevant experience.
In the same way that we discussed the returning worker above, the disabled job seeker can use a functional resume format if there are
gaps in the
years of
employment or changes in fields of interest.
An
employment gap is a period of months or
years when the job applicant was not employed at a job.
However, when you have recent
gaps in your work history (within the past
year or so), whether from being laid - off and out of work, taking time out from the workplace to spend with your family, traveling, going back to school, or for any reason, your cover letter gives you an opportunity to explain an
employment gap.
Depending on how you write a functional resume, you may decide not to include any
years of experience or
employment history in order to cover a
gap.
Or for those who choose not to list their
years of
employment if they have had
gaps or are concerned with being «aged out» of a role, they can present just a snapshot of companies and positions held, while keeping the focus on their functional experiences.
If exclusion of the position from the resume causes a notable
employment gap more than a decade ago, it will be less relevant to the hiring manager than if that
gap happened within the last
year or two.
If the
gap in your CV is just a few short months, and you've been in
employment for
years, you might not even need to include all of your experience.
For example, if you were away from the workforce from February 2006 to October 2007, you can de-emphasize the
gap by listing
years of
employment (vs. months and
years).
This is suitable for people who have been employed in the same field for
years with no big
employment gaps and have made remarkable progress in their field.
Therefore, even if they had an
employment gap during the middle of the
year 2014, it appears as though they've been consistently working.
In the same way that the returning worker must address the absence of
years on a resume, the disabled job seeker should use a functional resume format to address
gaps in
years of
employment or changes in fields of interest.
You should be prepared to detail each position for the past five
years and account for any
gaps in
employment during that period.
There is a way to move around that by only listing the
year to
year dates of
employment instead of month /
year to month /
year employment which may expose a
gap that may prove problematic to a hiring officer.
Don't try to hide
gaps by fudging
employment dates, or trying to hide it by only stating the
year or leaving of dates completely.
Many professionals also mask short
employment gaps by using whole -
year formats for dates instead of month /
year, but many hiring managers report that this raises suspicions and few resume experts recommend trying to hide
gaps in this manner.
A client reached out with the issue trying to figure out how to deal with a nine -
year gap in
employment.
Clients also benefit from the
years of education and expertise we've developed in the field, and can give them an edge even with tricky situations like job - hopping,
employment gaps, or a career change.
