As a
student of
midwifery many
years ago, the question of whether I would pursue private practice or seek employment within a larger corporation always poked it nose into my studies.
I went to a couple of homebirths because as a
midwifery student, prior 16
years labor and delivery nurse, I was biased against homebirth because of tragic transfers I had either witnessed or cared for when nursing.
Peggy Garland, CNM, MPH is a retired midwife who worked for 30
years in home and hospital births, participated in maternity care research, taught
midwifery students in a variety of settings and held many leadership roles in professional advocacy for midwives at the national and state level, including with MANA and NACPM.
