In the U.S., the popularity
of the
breed has been declining slightly in recent
years, according to
AKC breed statistics, but the
breed is still the first choice among those that love the looks and personality
of these little dogs.
The American Kennel Club (
AKC) recognizes over 170
breeds of dogs, and adds more almost every
year.
What's interesting is that despite the fact that the
breed originated in England, the Kennel Club
of England recognized it as a distinct
breed only in 1891, three
years after it was recognized by
AKC.
Three
years after receiving
AKC recognition, the Jack Russell Terrier Association
of America renamed the
breed Parson Russell Terrier, and changed its own name to the Parson Russell Terrier Association
of America.
The process
of creating a new
breed and achieving
AKC recognition is long and involved, requiring many
years and many generations.
In the spring
of that
year the
AKC asked several representatives
of the ASTC to meet with them in New York to discuss revising the
breed standard.
The Standard has its origins in the 1890's, created by the founders
of the Boston
breed during its infancy, and has had a few revisions, as allowed by the
AKC, over the
years, most recently in 2011.
Labrador retrievers have been the most popular
breed of dog in the U.S. for several
years according to the
AKC.
Every
year the good folks at the American Kennel Club (
AKC) run a survey
of dog registrations to determine which
breeds rule our hearts.
Dr. Larry Glickman
of Purdue University conducted a five -
year study
of nearly 2,000 show dogs, funded by a grant from the
AKC Canine Health Foundation, the Morris Animal Foundation, and 11 dog
breed clubs.
Although Mini Bulls remain fairly rare in this country — fewer than 200 litters are registered with the
AKC each
year — MBTCA remains committed to its mission
of promoting high standards in
breeding practices so that more dog fanciers can fall in love with our mischievous, mighty Minis.
The club led development
of the
breed and increased the number
of responsible breeders and fanciers in the U.S. for 25
years until Mini Bulls achieved full recognition by the
AKC as a distinct
breed for competition in 1992.

of the American Kennel Club called to invite Ellie and Bob to represent the Boston
breed and non-sporting group by accepting the prestigious
AKC Breeder
of the
Year medal for the Non-Sporting Group and competing in the
AKC Breeder
of Year competition with all dog groups represented.

AKC, while Irish literature refers to this ancient
