We've had it since 2001 and I have LOATHED the
yellow stained wood and peachy -
stained - supposed - to - have - been - white - painted legs since the dudes
from the unfinished furniture store delivered it!!
The shelves were covered with
stained contact paper
from the 80s and the walls were
yellowed and
stained from years of use.
Our entire home was done in shades of
yellow varying
from the Dijon mustard color, nicotine
stain color and of course the yield sign
yellow.
The oil base primer keeps the cabinets
from yellowing later on because it seals in the old color /
stain color and lessens the risk of the paint chipping off later.You don't «have to» prime with chalk paint, but I would not recommend skipping oil base primer when painting kitchen cabinets.
First I went to Sherwin Williams with a sample (shelf)
from the entertainment center and a piece of
yellow pine and they custom made a
stain color for me to match then I used a wood conditioner (made by Minwax) before applying the
stain which helped with the splotchiness.
(We typically stay away
from polyurethane on furniture because it will
yellow over time, but on a dark
stain,
yellowing will not be an issue.)
