ALBANY — Language tucked into the tentative state budget could mean a more convenient bus ride home for
yeshiva students, but leave taxpayers with a hefty bill.

Not exact matches
It would be convenient to blame these incidents on Islamists, but the perpetrators typically turn out to be
students from ultraconservative
yeshivas.

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio rolled out a federally funded program on Sept. 6, promising free meals for all NYC
students, but Jewish advocates say 30,000
students in
yeshivas aren't getting the free meals because none of the food is certified kosher.
Mr. Felder — an Orthodox Jew who represents a large Orthodox Jewish constituency in Brooklyn — has expressed support in the past for allowing
yeshivas leeway in complying with state law, which requires that private schools must offer
students instruction that is «at least substantially equivalent» to that offered in public schools.
Roughly 9,000
students, the vast majority of them black or Latino, attend public schools in the district, while about 24,000
students who live there attend
yeshivas.
It was a particularly strong issue in the East Ramapo Central School District, where the school board has faced criticism for budgetary cutbacks, allegations of improper placement of special education
students, and providing school materials to private
yeshivas, among other complaints.
State Sen. Martin Golden (R - Brooklyn) defended the measure, saying it's intended to ensure safe transportation for all
students — not just those in
yeshivas.

students, most of them black and Latino, attend the public schools in East Ramapo, while another 23,000

And let's not forget East Ramapo, where the elected school board has been accused of diverting resources to the 24,000
students in private
Yeshivas at the expense of the 9,000 predominantly low - income
students of color who remain in the district schools.
But the white
students go elsewhere — many to
yeshivas or other private schools.

When state auditors tried to visit some of these
yeshivas that were receiving money for special education
students and, therefore, obliged to adhere to the state course content standards, they were turned away.
