Yield calculations
Eventually I will begin focusing on higher
yielding stocks (and even some preferred stock) in my retirement
portfolio to help provide the income I will
need in retirement.
In other words, allocation to high
yield needs to be viewed in the context of an entire
portfolio.
Understanding
yield vs. total return is essential in constructing
portfolios that meet income generating
needs while providing growth for the future.
A second reason to be cautious about high -
yield bonds is that they don't provide much stability in a
portfolio when you're likely to
need it most.
For example, to generate $ 40,000 in dividends every year from a
portfolio that
yields on average 4 %, you would
need a $ 1,000,000
portfolio.
As central banks move away from ultra-loose monetary policy, and the global economic expansion matures, bond fund managers will
need to ensure their
portfolios draw on a truly diverse range of sources of return and carefully consider
portfolio risk if they are to generate
yield in the current market environment.
As a dividend growth investor, I like to keep my
portfolio's dividend
yield above 4 % which happens to be the income level we would
need to live in retirement.
In our latest white paper, Senior
Portfolio Manager Duane McAllister explains how the recent boost in short - term
yields not only allows investors to once again earn a reasonable nominal return on their money without
needing to take significant duration risk, it also provides an opportunity to earn a positive real return, since core inflation measures remain below the Fed's 2.0 % target.
A
portfolio yielding a conservative 4 % would
need to be just under $ 400,000 to provide you enough income to be financially free.
For example, if your goal is to have an annual dividend income of $ 35,000 and your dividend stock
portfolio has an average
yield of 3.5 %, then you will
need $ 1,000,000 in capital to attain that income goal.
However, careful stock picking can not be expected to
yield excess returns, and if you pick stocks manually, you
need to rebalance your
portfolio occasionally.
At a current
yield of 2.2 percent for this 4 - fund
portfolio, I would
need a value of $ 1.1 million in this account to pay $ 24,000 per year.
In short, you
need the «triple threat» stocks that fuel my 8 % -
yielding «No Withdrawal» retirement
portfolio!
Real estate investment trusts (REITs) belong in your
portfolio, but focus on more than high
yield — you
need income growth, too.
Your dividend
yield needs to be 2.50 % or more for your withdrawals to equal 4 % of your initial
portfolio's balance (plus inflation).
So if you are making retirement / financial independence decisions based on the market value of your investment you
need to look at the current
yield of your
portfolio.
Dividend paying index funds typically have
yields in the 1 - 2 % range, so I would
need significantly more time and / or money to achieve the same income that I'm currently getting from my dividend investing
portfolio.
Sure,
yields are low but you still
need to count on this asset class to provide income and reduce your overall
portfolio volatility, especially given low rates, heightened global uncertainty and the threat of inflation.
In my opinion you
need a combination of good
yield and reasonable growth, because without
yield you can not replace your earned income with passive income, but without growth you can't expand your
portfolio.
This primary function of an investment
portfolio (using mutual fund dividend and capital gains
yields to generate retirement paychecks) is not possible with American Funds, because they don't have the asset classes
needed to obtain a high stable income stream.
Those are some juicy
yields to pass up and some much
needed diversification
needed in my
portfolio.
They
need their
portfolios to
yield at least 3 % and preferably much more.
