Kupalo Crater, one of
the youngest craters on Ceres, shows off many fascinating attributes at the high image resolution of 120 feet (35 meters) per pixel.

Brilliant streaks
on the
crater walls suggest that even the feeble gravity of this moon is strong enough to erode loose material; bluish regions near the
crater rim may be
younger exposed surfaces.
Almost 8 centuries later, a relatively
young crater — dubbed Giordano Bruno, after the heretic who was burned at the stake in Rome for arguing that planets orbit other stars — was discovered
on the far side of the moon by the Soviet spacecraft Lunik III.
«For reasons that we're not totally sure about, the same properties can arise from the scattering of rocky ejecta
on the blocky terrain of
young impact
craters on the moon,» Campbell notes.
Studying the
craters on the moon offers a window into that violent history of the
young solar system that is not nearly as accessible
on Earth.
«We detected borates in a
crater on Mars that's 3.8 billion years old,
younger than the likely formation of life
on Earth,» said Gasda.
Dr. Chapman has been the Principal Investigator of many NASA and NSF grants and has been P.I. of research concerning the Late Heavy Bombardment of the Moon (and inner solar system), astronomical observations of very
young asteroid families, analysis of NEAR Shoemaker images of Eros, studies of secondary
cratering on Mars, and investigations of the
cratering records of the Galilean satellites.
They continued to study the Galilean satellites Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto, especially secondary / primary
cratering of the exceptionally
young terrain
on Europa (their paper appeared in the 20 Oct. 2005 issue of Nature).
«The most striking thing about this image is, we have not yet found a single impact
crater on this region,» Spencer said, adding that the smooth terrain suggests it is much
younger than the 4.5 - billion - year - old solar system.
It is one of the
youngest impact
craters found
on Earth.
On the way down you will explore the three
younger craters and the most recent lava flows, all whilst admiring the breathtaking volcanic landscape!
Whether a
crater of this size would be sufficient to promote
Younger Dryas release I must leave to others; I am not an expert
on the cryosphere.
